How to win Arathi Basin

For the most part, winning this battleground depends mostly on speed (moving and thinking quickly), coordination and the gear and skill of players.

Overall, the game is simply won by being the first team to reach 1600 resources.  This is achieved by holding the most number of bases/flags for the longest period of time.

Control of any base can alternate between teams.  That is, bases can be taken by either team at any time.  For instance, a base can be controlled by the alliance, taken over by the horde, and retaken by the alliance.  An average battle with evenly matched players will see control of bases rotate several times.   The goal is to gain control of as many bases as possible without losing control of those bases.

Nodes/Flags

At the beginning of the game all flags are neutral and not owned by either team.  Once you begin to click on a flag, it takes 8 seconds to channel before you to take it.  If you take any damage during this time it will interrupt you and not count as a capture.  If the flag was controlled by the enemy when you assaulted it, they will no longer collect resources from it but your team will not collect resources from it until it is fully captured, which takes one minute from the time it is assaulted.

Flags can be in any of these states:

neutral: not owned by either team
friendly-contested: assaulted by your team but not yet captured
enemy-contested: assaulted by the enemy team but not yet captured
friendly-controlled: owned by your team and collecting resources
hostile-controlled
: owned by the enemy and collecting resources

Locations of nodes within Arathi Basin.

If you are attacking a flag that is being attacked for the first time or that is fully owned by the enemy team, a capture time begins of one minute.  That is, once a flag has been assaulted, it takes one minute for it to be fully captured and start collecting resources.

If a player assaults a flag that is already owned by the opposite team, a player from the opposite team has one minute to defend the flag.  The 8 second assault timer also applies to players defending a base.  If the player successfully defends the flag it is automatically recaptured and there is no one minute capture timer.

Only bases that are fully controlled will collect resources.  The more bases that are controlled, the faster resources are gained.  A team cannot run out of resources, only gain them.

Bonus Buffs

Standing at a flag that your team owns grants you an "Honorable Defender" buff that will gain you 50% more honor for each honorable kill.

Each of the bases also spawns one of three possible buffs.  The buffs can be picked up by one person only.  They are located inside the structures at Stables, Lumber Mill, Blacksmith, and Farm, and just outside of Gold Mine.

Restoration buff inside the Blacksmith of Arathi Basin.
A restoration buff inside of the Blacksmith.

The 3 types of Bonus Buffs that you can get in Arathi Basin are:

Restoration buff
the restoration buff restores health and mana.

Berserker buff
the berserking buff increases damage dealt by 30%,  damage taken  by 10%, and slightly increases your size for 1 minute

Battleground Speed Buff
the speed buff increases your speed by 100% for 10 seconds

Which Bonus Buffs should I use?

You shouldn't necessarily take a bonus buff just because it's there.  Buffs have specific purposes and are not beneficial to everyone.  You do want to prevent the enemy from using as many bonus buffs as possible.  Even if you don't need the buff, you may want to take it if there's a risk the enemy might take it.

Speed Buff:  Can be used by anyone.  Beneficial if you are being chased in combat or attempting to chase someone else.  Can be used to get to another location faster.  You can also take this buff in hopes that another, more beneficial buff appears next.

Restoration/ Rejuve Buff:  Take this buff if you are low on health or mana.  Very beneficial buff for healers, especially during long battles.  If you're a healer involved in a long battle (i.e. defending a node with several teammates), try to stand near the bonus buff spawn point to quickly grab it when running out of mana.  Attempt to keep the enemy from using this bonus buff.

Berserker Buff: This buff should be taken by damage-dealing (dps) players and not healers.  Take this buff whenever you are in battle with enemy players or if you are planning on immediately engaging in battle (i.e. zerging a node).  Keep in mind you also take damage with this buff on.  Attempt to keep the enemy from getting this buff and steer clear of enemies that do have it.

Honor Gains:

For every 260 resources collected (260, 520, 780, 1040, 1300, 1560) you receive 20 bonus honor at level 60.  During the battleground holiday, bonus honor is collected with increments of 160 (160, 320, 480 etc.).  As well, winning the match will grant you an additional 20 bonus honor.  You will also gain honor from honorable kills and standing at a node grants a buff which allows you to gain an additional 50% honor from honorable kills. (Note that players now receive Justice Points.  This section will be updated shortly).

You receive 10 reputation for every 160 resources gained.  So at 480 resources, you will have gained 30 reputation.  This is equal to 100 reputation if you win the game.  You will need to win 320 matches, excluding matches during the battleground holiday, to become exalted with your particular faction.  Playing Arathi Basin matches during the holiday will grant you 10 reputation for every 150 resources for a total of 130 reputation for each win.
