General Game Play:

During any given Wintergrasp battle you will either be on the attacking (offense) team or the defending team.  The attacking team will be attempting to capture Wintergrasp fortress and the defending team will attempt to defend it.

Playing Offense:

Playing offense means that you are on the attacking team and your goal is to capture Wintergrasp Fortress.  Your main focus, no matter what you are doing at any particular time, should remain on capturing the fortress.  This means do not PvP unless absolutely necessary.  It takes up valuable time and resources if you are just battling enemy players.

Main Roles of Offensive Players:

- make sure your team controls as many workshops as possible
- make sure the tower cannons at the keep are destroyed
- make sure vehicles are being used at all times
- make sure vehicles are protected
- defend the southern towers

It is imperative that as many vehicles as possible are in use at all times.  Remember that vehicles are essential to destroying the walls around the fortress.  Far too often players are occupied with other things such as general PvPing and do not take advantage of the very important vehicles.

Times that you should battle enemy players as offense
:

- when you are trying to achieve a higher rank to build  a vehicle
- if you are attacking or defending any of the workshops
- if you are defending the southern towers

Playing Defense:

Main Roles of Defensive Players:

- destroy the southern towers
- capture as many workshops as possible (controlling the northern workshops as the defensive team pushes the attacking team south so it takes longer for them to reach the keep with vehicles; controlling the southern workshops helps to build vehicles that are close for destroying the southern towers)
- destroy vehicles that are nearing the keep

Remember that destroying vehicles is more important that killing enemy players because vehicles destroy walls, spells and abilities do not.

When to Call for Backup:

As a player on the defending team, you would call for assistance if the enemy was attacking a wall and your teammates were not around.  Mention the area that is being attacked as well as an estimate of how many players and vehicles there are.  You may also call for backup as a defending player if you are attempting to destroy the southern towers and there are enemy players protecting them or you can't otherwise destroy them on your own.

There are a few scenarios in which players on the attacking team might call for backup.  If the enemy is destroying the southern towers, you would ask for assistance with protecting them.  If the enemy is attacking or gaining control of any of the workshops you may ask for assistance with protecting them or getting them back.  If you are on one side of the fortress and you see that there may be a way to attack from here you could call it out.  For example, if your teammates are primarily on the eastern side of the map and you notice that there is a lack of defense on the west, you could call out for more players to come west.   You may also want to call out for a gunner if you are driving a siege engine.

Keep in mind that your teammates may not always respond to your requests for backup, but you should still always communicate as best as possible.  As well, if you are able to, help other players that also call for assistance.

Know your Role as a Player and a Teammate:

Even with well geared and skilled players you may not be victorious if you and your teammates do not play the way you should as an individual and as a teammate.  You should always play "properly" even if your other teammates are not.

For example, if you are on the defending team, you would probably not want to drive around in a siege tank unless you are attempting to destroy the southern towers.   Although you may think you are protected, you are much more efficient battling without a tank because you will move much faster and have better coordination.   If you are defending the keep you will probably be in a tower cannon or attacking enemies and vehicles that are nearing the keep.  Remember that destroying the enemy's vehicles is more important than killing enemy players when they are attacking the walls.

If you are on the attacking team you will have to determine what your team's priorities are and assist where needed.  If the defending team is destroying the southern towers and your team is having trouble keeping them up, you may want to head south and attempt to protect your towers.  Otherwise, the enemy may destroy them and reduce the length of the battle.  If you see that the defending team is attempting to destroy the southern towers but your team is almost in the keep you may decide to help your teammates attacking the keep rather than protecting your towers.  You will have to determine which takes priority.

Generally speaking, if you are on the attacking team, your main priority will be making sure that your team has access to as many vehicles as possible and that people are using them.  Secondly, you will want to protect the southern towers.  As a player on the attacking team, you should not be outside of the keep PvPing unless your are trying to achieve a rank, you are protecting vehicles and all vehicles are built.  You will not win the battle for Wintergrasp as an attacking team unless vehicles are being utilized to destroy walls and enter the keep.

Whether you are on the attacking team or the defending team, if you are a healer or you do not have very good dps or survivability, you should try to stay near other players on your team.

Sample Match Strategies:

Wintergrasp covers a lot more area than most battlegrounds.  It can have full raids or just a few players.  How you decide to play the match may depend on how many players you have on your team.  The following are basic sample strategies for full raids or near-full raids.

Sample Strategy 1 (Attacking):

Whichever group you are in make sure to get your ranking up to First Lieutenant as soon as possible.  This can be done before or during going to your allocated area.  Ensure that vehicles are filled as much as possible and that siege engines have gunners (the middle passenger can control a turret).  If all vehicles are full have the extra players run along with them to protect them from enemies attacking.

Group One - defend Eastpark Workshop and Flamewatch Tower*
Group Two - defend Westpark Workshop and Shadow's Edge Tower*
*groups one and two would both keep a watch on Winter's Edge Tower
Group Three - destroy tower cannons then join groups four, five, six*
Group Four - Head west and prepare to attack from west
Group Five - Head west and prepare to attack from west
Group Six - Head west and prepare to attack from west
*group three also helps defend northern workshops should they be attacked
Group Seven - Attack from east
Group Eight - Attack from east

Hint: A player on the attacking team that has ranged attacks can go to Wintergrasp before the battle and wait near one of the keep's towers.  When the battle begins they can land on top of the tower and destroy the tower cannons (there are two on each tower) then jump down to one of the ledges and kill the tower cannon there.  Be careful when on the tower because you need to be very close to the edge to reach the cannons.

If any group or set of groups is having difficulty in their area, they can communicate this with the rest of the raid.  players that are able to can go and assist them.  if an area is becoming overrun by the enemy, the group or groups assigned to that area can choose a new location to assist.

Sample Strategy 1 (Defending):

Unless you are heading south to destroy the towers it is not imperative that you achieve a ranking at any particular time.  Defending the keep does not require vehicles.

Group One - players get in the keep's outermost tower cannons*
Group Two - players get in the keep's outermost tower cannons*
*group one joins group three, group two joins group four afterwards
Group Three - attack Eastpark Workshop and Flamewatch Tower*
Group Four - attack Westpark Workshop and Shadow's Edge Tower*
*groups three and four will attack Winter's Edge Tower after the other towers are destroyed, or one player that is not needed can begin to attack it before the other two towers are destroyedOnce all the towers have been destroyed these teams should group together to attack one or both of the northern workshops.
Group Five- protect the keep on the west
Group Six - protect the keep on the west
Group Seven- protect the keep on the east
Group Eight- protect the keep on the east

Although it is good to destroy the southern towers as soon as possible, protecting the keep takes priority.  If the groups at the keep are having difficulty they should call it out.  The groups protecting the keep should also be communicating which side is being attacked the most.
